NZ communities to benefit from disaster collaboration

New Zealand communities will be better prepared for natural hazards
such as earthquakes, floods and other climate change issues, thanks
to a partnership with a top United States disaster research centre. Massey
University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University
of North Carolina (UNC) allowing it’s Wellington-based
Joint Centre for Disaster Research to work with UNC’s Centre
for the Study of Natural Hazards and Disasters.

PhD student wins building research award

Research into keeping people safe from flooding and tsunamis has
earned PhD scholar Wendy Saunders the prestigious Zonta Building
Research Award. It was presented to her by the Governer General
Anand Satyanand at Government House earlier this week.

Preparing
the health services for emergency management

Health services deal with routine crises every day, but
little is known about how they would perform in a major emergency
such as an influenza pandemic.
PhD student Debra Ellis will study how staff at the Auckland District
Health Board cope during a national influenza pandemic exercise
this month.

Disaster
research centre established

A new research centre established by the University and GNS Science
aims to better prepare New Zealand against natural disasters.
Based at the School of Psychology on the Wellington campus, the
joint Centre for Disaster Research concentrates the skills of psychologists,
sociologists, planners, geologists, risk assessors, Mäori researchers,
and economists from both organisations.
A function to celebrate the establishment of the centre was held
at the institute’s Lower Hutt office last week with Research,
Science and Technology Minister Steve Maharey witnessing the signing
of an agreement.

New Zealand needs a better understanding of the human impacts
of natural disasters, says the director of a new Centre for Disaster
Research.
Associate Professor David Johnston says recent disasters in New
Orleans and Indonesia show we need to better understand how communities
are affected by such events.
The University and GNS Science have opened a joint Centre for Disaster
Research to better prepare New Zealand against natural disasters.
Based at the School of Psychology, the joint centre concentrates
the skills of psychologists, sociologists, planners, geologists,
risk assessors, Mäori researchers, and economists from both
organisations and other collaborating groups.
